City Badges

I chose four cities with distinct personalities and designed typographic badges for each one.

DESIGN PROCESS

I picked four cities that have played very different yet important parts in my life throughout the years. For each badge, I made sure to include the city, state, year it was founded, and its’ slogan/something it’s known for.

AUSTIN, TEXAS

Having been born in Austin and growing up forty-five minutes outside of the city, it is a place that I hold close to my heart. I grew up attending events in Austin, from concerts and music festivals to family weddings and reunions. My mother’s side of the family has been rooted in Austin for generations and is the setting for most of my grandmother’s life stories.

Austin is a lively city known for being the live music capital of the world, home to the University of Texas at Austin, and for “being weird.” In my typographic badge, I included UT Austin’s color (burnt orange), its’ status of being “the live music capital of the world,” and the year the city was founded. I opted for a bold yet groovy typeface to showcase Austin’s “weirdness.”

POYNETTE, WISCONSIN

My father grew up in Poynette and my family would visit my grandparents there every other year during my childhood. My grandparents’ house was a magical place for childhood me. It was a little red house full of all of my grandparents’ knick-knacks and collections. They collected a lot of things: spoons from every country they’ve traveled to, stamps, hummel figurines, merry-go-round horse figurines, and much more.

Poynette is a small village that mostly consists of farmland. Due to its proximity to Madison, residents are proud fans of the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In my typographic badge, I included UW Madison’s colors (red and white), the year the village was incorporated, and its slogan.

REDONDO BEACH, CALIFORNIA

After living in Texas for fifteen years, my dad’s career took me on an adventure to the golden state. I spent my sophomore year of high school living in Redondo Beach and it was a place of growth for me.

Redondo Beach is a small coastal city that is very laid back and focuses on community involvement. In my typographic badge, I included naval colors (red, white, and blue), the year the city was incorporated, and its slogan. I also incorporated a sunrise, which with the blue background, looks like a sunrise over the water.

PFLUGERVILLE, TEXAS

I lived in Pflugerville from ages 0-20, minus the one year in California. All of my childhood memories are here, from attending Deutschen Pfest every spring to graduating high school.

Pflugerville is a booming suburban city outside Austin that is known for its German heritage and adding a “P” in front of all words that typically begin with “F” ("Pfestival, “Pfun”, “Pfair”). In my typographic badge, I included the city’s colors (green and blue), “Welcome” in German, the year it was founded, and a fun Germanic typeface.
